TO RUSSIA WITH SONG
A Cappella Showcase's Journey to Russia
TO RUSSIA WITH SONG With a
history of many memorable events, A Cappella Showcase is preparing for one to
top all the rest.
At the invitation of the RUSSIAN MINISTRY OF CULTURE, A Cappella Showcase will
be representing both Canada, and Harmony, Inc. at the 9th International Festival
of Barbershop Harmony, in St. Petersburg, Russia, from August 17th to August
25th, 2008. Being the first chorus from Harmony, Inc. and the first women's
chorus from Canada to be invited, it is indeed an honor to attend this
prestigious event.
And.... A Cappella Showcase's own FRONT & CENTER will also be featured artists
in the Festival.
Representing the Barbershop Harmony Society, the TORONTO MEGACITY CHORUS will
also be guest artists at the Festival, as well as current International 2nd
place Medalist Quartet, O.C. TIMES.
Not a contest, this event is a series of concerts being held in some of the most
beautiful concert halls in St. Petersburg. These are such a huge success that
each concert is sold out every year, with people waiting outside the concert
halls for a chance to get inside. Barbershop harmony is very much loved and
appreciated in Russia, since it was introduced there 9 years ago, through this
festival.
Other musical events for the chorus will include a Masters Class given to the
Russian women taking part in the concert. Interesting that these participants
are all musicians, and find it fascinating that here in North America we are
able to take part in our organization simply as "women who love to sing", and
not as trained musicians.
The schedule for both the singers and the guests of the singers (known as
V.I.P's, is jam packed with sightseeing, and evening entertainment, such as a
folklore show, and the Moscow Circus on a 3-day extension to Moscow after the
Festival.
The grand finale will be an 8-part mass sing of ALL the participants, conducted
by Festival Music Director, Dr. Greg Lyne. The rehearsals alone for the combined
singers promise to be a highlight of the week.
Upon receiving the invitation in June of 2007, A Cappella Showcase immediately
extended a further invitation to everyone in Area 3, and Area 5, as the closest
geographical area to take part. 13 GUEST MEMBERS from other chapters in Area 3 &
5 will be a part of A Cappella Showcase for the Festival performances, making
the number of performing members a total of 70.
A few Gala Farewell events are being planned for July, so stayed tuned for news
about these exciting shows.
Funding for the event is solely the responsibility of the participants.
Fund raising events are being held through the year, and your support in any way
at all is most appreciated.
